5 Ways to Celebrate National Love A Tree Day

May 16th each year is National Love A Tree Day, a day to show our appreciation for these amazing plants.

From food, to fire, to shelter, to the air we breathe, there is perhaps no form of life that has provided more support for humanity than trees. So take a moment to reflect on the greatness of trees.

1. Hiking in the woods

What better way to enjoy the trees than to get out and take a walk through the woods? Take a solo walk or go out with a friend to get some fresh air. Think about the trees that taught you things. Those trees you played with or ate the fruit from. The trees that sprinkled you with leaves or supported your tire swing.

2. Recognizing new species

In the forest, you may encounter new tree friends. Download a plant identification app before you go, or pick up a book on local flora and fauna. Learn the names of species you've never seen before, what they are used for.

3. Creating art

When you are out and about, take some pictures of trees. Look at them from different angles. Notice the way the branches split, the shape of the leaves, the color of the flowers, and the thickness of the bark. Turn the photos into keepsakes by printing and framing them.

4. Plant a tree

The best way to show your love for trees is to plant one. Plant a fruit tree in your garden or a shade tree in your backyard. Volunteer to join an organization that plants trees in your area.

5. Pruning trees

If you have a tree that blooms in late summer, spring is the ideal time to prune it. Trees that bloom earlier will do better if you prune them after the flowers are gone. No matter when you prune, your tree will thank you for its enhanced health and beauty.
