Recently, the first batch of products from the 5,000-ton/year para-aramid fiber project of Jiangsu Shengbang New Materials Co., LTD., a subsidiary of Shenghong Holding Group, were qualified and rolled off the production line, successfully achieving mass production. The production process of Shenghong aramid has successfully overcome key technical challenges such as solvent recovery and polymerization processes, achieving a major breakthrough in the key performance of domestic para-aramid.
The production technology of aramid, especially some high-performance products, has long been monopolized by foreign enterprises. Through the independent research and development and technological reserves of the National Advanced Functional Fiber Innovation Center led by Shenghong Holding Group, and by establishing an integrated cooperation platform of production, education and research with domestic universities and research institutions, it has solved the key technologies that have been restricting the production of aramid. The para-aramid mass-produced this time has reached the leading domestic level in core indicators such as fiber diameter and strength.
In April 2022, Shenghong Holding Group established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Jiangsu Shengbang New Materials Co., LTD., and planned to build an aramid industrial park in the Lingang Industrial Zone of Guanyun County, Lianyungang City. It aims to create a world-class aramid new materials base integrating the research and development, production and sales of aramid raw materials, aramid fibers and aramid products.
With the mass production of 60,000 tons/year of phenylenediamine (Phase I) raw materials and 5,000 tons/year of para-aramid, Shenghong Holding Group will gradually build a strategic emerging industrial chain cluster with the most complete aramid industrial chain, the richest filament varieties and the most complete downstream applications in China.
What is aramid?
Aramid is a high-performance chemical synthetic fiber. Its strength is 5 to 6 times that of steel wire, while its weight is only about 1/5 of that of steel wire. The product is mainly used in aerospace, high-speed rail, ships, hydropower, nuclear industry and other fields.
In the field of textiles, the outstanding performance of aramid also makes it a brilliant star. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, aramid is often used to manufacture high-end protective clothing, such as fire suits and military and police combat uniforms.
In the production of fire suits, the flame retardancy (limiting oxygen index 28% - 32%) and high-temperature resistance (strength maintained at 90% at 200℃) of aramid make it the core material for fire suits and high-temperature work suits. It can maintain structural stability for a long time in high-temperature environments, effectively block heat transfer, and provide reliable thermal protection for firefighters. Meanwhile, its excellent tear resistance can withstand the scratches of sharp objects that may be encountered during rescue operations, effectively ensuring the personal safety of firefighters.
In terms of military and police combat uniforms, bulletproof vests and helmets are made by superimposing multiple layers of aramid fabrics. This not only endows the clothing with excellent protective performance but also, due to its light weight, reduces the load on combat personnel, enhances movement flexibility, and brings better protective effects and wearing comfort.
The application of aramid in daily sportswear is also gradually increasing. It is often used in mountaineering suits, windbreakers, ski suits and other products. Its light weight and tear-resistant properties enhance the safety of outdoor sports. For instance, the uppers of some high-end sports shoes are reinforced with aramid fibers, which not only enhance the support and wear resistance of the uppers but also improve the breathability of the shoes, providing athletes with a more comfortable wearing experience. In outdoor sports clothing such as mountain climbing and cycling, the addition of aramid fibers makes the clothing more tear-resistant, capable of withstanding the challenges of complex environments and providing reliable protection for outdoor sports enthusiasts.
In addition, aramid fibers can imitate the structure of cotton through curling treatment and be compounded with other fibers (such as elastic fibers) to make yarns, endowing clothing with functions such as anti-static, moisture absorption and sweat wicking. When applied to suits, shirts and other garments, it can enhance the texture and washability.
Among industrial textiles, aramid also holds an important position. In the field of industrial conveyor belts, aramid, as a reinforcing material, can significantly enhance the strength and service life of conveyor belts, and adapt to high-temperature and high-load working environments. In terms of rope manufacturing, aramid ropes, due to their high strength and light weight, are widely used in scenarios such as navigation and rock climbing where rope performance is highly demanded, significantly enhancing the safety and efficiency of operations.
The mass production of the 5,000-ton/year para-aramid fiber project achieved by Shenghong Holding Group this time will bring new development opportunities to the textile industry. Its advanced production technology is expected to reduce the production cost of aramid, making the application of aramid products in the textile field more extensive and popular, and promoting the further development of the textile industry towards high performance and functionality.
In the future, Shenghong Holding Group will continue to focus on the high-performance fiber field and contribute more to promoting the development of China's new materials industry and achieving the localization of high-end materials.
