PUMA announces partnership with Spinnova
Use of innovative wood fibers in sports fashion collections
On December 10, sports company PUMA announced a partnership with SPINNOVA, a Finnish textile materials innovation company, to develop wood Spinnova fiber proof-of-concept products for future collections, in particular the PUMA sports style range.
Spinnova's joint venture, Woodspin Oy, a producer of wood SPINNOVA fibers, has a multi-year partnership with PUMA to ensure fiber production. The non-binding agreement will preserve Woodspin's capacity.
"Spinnova's innovative fiber technology represents a new pathway into the world of man-made cellulose fiber (MMCF) production, using water instead of chemicals to help produce these fibers," said Howard Williams, PUMA's global Director of innovative Apparel and Accessories.
"We are very pleased to announce SPINNOVA fibre's partnership with globally renowned brands such as PUMA. This marks an important step for Spinnova fibers in establishing market and industrial applications, which is necessary to scale up the fibers and SPINNOVA technology." "This is just the beginning," said Shariare Mahmood, Spinnova's chief product and sustainability officer. "We will continue to work with Woodspin and sign similar agreements with other partners."
"The partnership with PUMA demonstrates the potential of sustainable sources and renewable raw materials to transform the fashion industry by inspiring and empowering people to make more sustainable choices," said Jari Aittakari, Woodspin's sales director.
PUMA continues to invest in and integrate innovative material textiles, such as the previously launched RE:FIBRE Textile-to-textile Recycling program, which uses polyester textile waste from factory scraps, defective products and used clothing as the primary material source for manufacturing new textiles.
Adidas unveils new hoodies
Spinnova fiber is used
In addition to PUMA, Adidas partnered with Spinnova as early as 2022 to launch a new hoodie.
Eight months after Adidas and Spinnova announced their partnership, their first commercial product came out. The Adidas TERREX HS1 hoodie is a unisex midlayer for hikers and outdoor explorers, consisting of natural SPINNOVA fiber and organic cotton, with no dyeing or bleaching chemicals, and at least 30% of the fabric is derived from wood Spinnova fiber.
This neutral mid-level hiking hoodie is versatile: it can be worn on wooded trails, rolled up in the hood for easy storage, or even used as a travel pillow. It is designed with a variety of sizes, genders and forms in mind. Since no dyeing or bleaching is done, less water is used compared to the standard dyeing process, in conjunction with the natural color of the material.
The launch of the hoodie marks an important milestone in Spinnova's business journey and signals both brands' long-term commitment to sustainability. According to Adidas' ambitious sustainability plan, by 2025, 9 out of 10 Adidas products will be manufactured using sustainable technologies, materials, designs or manufacturing methods, and Spinnova will play an important role in this process.
"This Adidas Terrex HS1 hoodie reflects our ambition to help progressive partners like Adidas bring versatile products to market with no compromise in performance," said Janne Poranen, co-founder and CEO of Spinnova. "We are excited to see how consumers will embrace our first commercial product with Adidas Terrex and look forward to continuing to work closely with Adidas." .
"Using Spinnova fibers will enable Adidas to create high-performance clothing while reducing the CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste typically required to produce such products." Carla Murphy, general manager of Adidas Terrex.
In 2021, Adidas became a cornerstone investor in Spinnova through Spinnova's IPO, thus gaining access to a large amount of Spinnova fiber production capacity. Spinnova and its Woodspin joint venture partner Suzano aim to reach a global fibre production capacity of 1 million tonnes per year within the next 10-12 years, providing multi-functional sustainable fibre at scale to fashion brands and retailers worldwide.
Made from 100% textile waste
biodegradable
Spinnova technology has changed the way textiles are manufactured worldwide. Based in Finland, Spinnova has developed groundbreaking patented technology to extract textile fibers from wood pulp or waste, such as leather, textiles or crop waste, without harmful chemicals or dissolved substances.
Spinnova technology does not produce any waste liquids or microplastics during the fiber production process, SPINNOVA fiber has extremely low CO2 emissions and water consumption, and is biodegradable and recyclable. Spinnova technology uses a mechanical process that gives the fibers the look and feel of natural cellulose fibers, such as cotton. Spinnova materials biodegrade quickly and are recyclable. The company is committed to using only sustainable raw materials, such as FSC-certified wood and waste, and producing without harmful or complex chemical processes.
Spinnova has received awards from Fast Company, ISPO, Scandinavian Outdoor, ANDAM, Monocle and Marie Claire UK.
Next generation materials:
Innovative materials are becoming potential stocks in the eyes of capital and brands
Next-generation materials are more sustainable and humane alternatives to petroleum-based synthetic materials and animal-based leather, silk, wool, down, fur and rare leather, with high performance based on abundant, renewable and non-toxic resources such as plants, algae, agricultural waste, fungi, microorganisms and captured CO2. Substances that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contain significantly fewer or no microplastics or other toxins.
According to the "State of the Industry Report: The Next Generation of New Materials" released by the non-profit organization Material Innovation Initiative (hereinafter referred to as MII), the global wholesale market for new materials will reach about $2.2 billion by 2026. This figure represents only 3% of the $70 billion potential market for new material applications.
Since 2014, investments in the new materials industry have totaled more than $3 billion, with investments reaching $504 million in 2023.
According to MII, the number of new materials companies has increased significantly over the past decade, and the market is still in its infancy. By the end of 2023, there were 141 new materials companies (102 by the end of 2022), most of which were founded after 2014, of which 92 focused on bionic research in animal leather, 21 on silk, 16 on wool, 14 on down, and 7 on fur.
Next-generation materials have grown from a niche concept to a key component of the sustainability strategies of leading global brands. If we take the reduction of carbon footprint as a clue and the timeline, it is not difficult to find that there are more and more fashion/sports companies collaborating with new materials/technology companies.
