With the in-depth advancement of the "Make the Best Use of Fabric" project, yak wool, a natural fiber representing China, is rejuvenating. On May 6th, a reporter from Beijing Youth Daily learned that starting from this year, JNBY will gradually open up the innovative yak wool fabric technology jointly developed with suppliers and share the achievements with the industry.
Since 2022, JNBY and Rong Design Library have launched a five-year "Make the Best Use of Fabric" project. Starting from the carrier of "fabric", the traditional Chinese handicrafts are exhaustively deconstructed for inheritance and innovation. Among them, yak wool, as a representative natural fiber of China, has been deeply studied.
Yak wool is a precious natural fiber unique to China, and its production process has significant ecological value. Yaks have low carbon emissions throughout their life cycle. Their feeding methods do not harm the root systems of vegetation, and their droppings can also be used as natural fertilizers and seed dispersants. This kind of fluff that falls off naturally every year demonstrates the natural balance between resource utilization and environmental protection.
Despite the huge market potential, the yak wool industry still faces many challenges. In 2024, JNBY, in collaboration with SHOKAY and other partners, launched the "Yak Wool Industry Revitalization Project", which includes formulating international sustainable standards for yak wool, providing animal welfare protection training to herders and conducting pasture certification, participating in the ecological restoration of grasslands in pastoral areas, and innovative research and development of yak wool fabrics. This project aims to connect multiple participants in the value chain from raw material collection to the consumer market, and promote the improvement and development of the entire local yak wool industry.
As a first-class protected animal in China, 95% of the world's yaks inhabit the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. Ruoergai County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is located on the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is an important natural habitat for yaks. However, in recent years, grassland desertification problems such as "black soil beaches" have become increasingly serious, directly affecting the healthy growth of yaks and the quality of their fur, weakening the land's water conservation capacity, and threatening the ecological balance of the upper reaches of the Yellow River.
In May 2024, the first phase of the 290-mu black soil beach restoration project of JNBY, "Originating from the Snowy Land, Velvet from Nature", was launched in the Ruoergai area. Recently, the project team once again visited the Heihe Pasture in Maixi Township, Ruoergai County, to carry out ecological restoration work on 100 mu of grassland. Brand members, partners and local herdsmen jointly sowed grass seeds on 100 mu of sandy land in Heihe Pasture, Maixi Township. Although the fresh greenery is faint, it marks the starting point of ecological recovery on the plateau. This exploration trip was jointly initiated by JNBY, Zaqiongcang Ecological Culture Development Center and the yak wool brand SHOKAY.
Zheng Dandan, the general manager of public relations of JNBY, said that starting from this year, JNBY will gradually open up the innovative yak wool fabric technology jointly developed with suppliers and share the achievements with the industry. With the popularization of standards, the improvement of the market and the coordination of the industrial chain, the overall competitiveness of the yak wool industry is bound to be significantly enhanced, and more and more consumers will also wear 100% traceable yak wool clothing.
