PUMA announces partnership with Spinnova

Use of innovative wood fibers in sports fashion collections

On December 10, sports company PUMA announced a partnership with SPINNOVA, a Finnish textile materials innovation company, to develop wood Spinnova fiber proof-of-concept products for future collections, in particular the PUMA sports style range.

Spinnova's joint venture, Woodspin Oy, a producer of wood SPINNOVA fibers, has a multi-year partnership with PUMA to ensure fiber production. The non-binding agreement will preserve Woodspin's capacity.

"Spinnova's innovative fiber technology represents a new pathway into the world of man-made cellulose fiber (MMCF) production, using water instead of chemicals to help produce these fibers," said Howard Williams, PUMA's global Director of innovative Apparel and Accessories.

This marks an important step for Spinnova fibers in establishing market and industrial applications, which is necessary to scale up the fibers and SPINNOVA technology." PUMA continues to invest in and integrate innovative material textiles, such as the previously launched RE:FIBRE Textile-to-textile Recycling program, which uses polyester textile waste from factory scraps, defective products and used clothing as the primary material source for manufacturing new textiles.

Adidas unveils new hoodies

Spinnova fiber is used

In addition to PUMA, Adidas partnered with Spinnova as early as 2022 to launch a new hoodie.

Eight months after Adidas and Spinnova announced their partnership, their first commercial product came out. The Adidas TERREX HS1 hoodie is a unisex midlayer for hikers and outdoor explorers, consisting of natural SPINNOVA fiber and organic cotton, with no dyeing or bleaching chemicals, and at least 30% of the fabric is derived from wood Spinnova fiber.

This neutral mid-level hiking hoodie is versatile: it can be worn on wooded trails, rolled up in the hood for easy storage, or even used as a travel pillow. It is designed with a variety of sizes, genders and forms in mind. Since no dyeing or bleaching is done, less water is used compared to the standard dyeing process, in conjunction with the natural color of the material.

The launch of the hoodie marks an important milestone in Spinnova's business journey and signals both brands' long-term commitment to sustainability. According to Adidas' ambitious sustainability plan, by 2025, 9 out of 10 Adidas products will be manufactured using sustainable technologies, materials, designs or manufacturing methods, and Spinnova will play an important role in this process.
