Celebrating Pentecost in creative ways at home can add excitement to your family’s devotional life as you thank God for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Church. Here we offer five inspirations to help you have a great Pentecost.
1. Enjoy a feast together.
It’s a holiday after all! Pick out your favorite holiday foods and break bread together. Use red napkins at the dining table. Afterwards, put on your favorite music and have a dance party in the living room. You can even wear red.
2. Listen together.
Grab a blanket and sit outside on the grass. Close your eyes. Pay attention to the physical sensations of being outside. Do you hear the birds chirping? Is it windy outside? Can you hear the breeze rustling through the grass or feel the wind on your skin?
3. Read together.
Light a candle and read the story of Pentecost as a family. Depending on the age of the family members, you can read a storybook Bible or read directly from the scriptures. If you can, you might even consider lighting a campfire outside.
4. Co-create.
We sometimes see the Holy Spirit appear in the form of fire, wind, or even a dove. Younger children might enjoy making a windmill like this and seeing what happens on a breezy day. We can't see the wind, but we can see what happens when the wind turns the windmill.
5. Sing together.
On the day of Pentecost, God gave the Holy Spirit to his disciples—can you imagine how they felt? They wait for this promised gift, wondering what happened after their world was turned upside down. How they longed to hear the voice of their friend Jesus! We are currently waiting. During these strange and unprecedented days, we long to hear God’s voice. Audrey Assad’s The Spirit of the Living God reminds us that God is the same God then and now. Consider learning/singing this song as a family.
