Table Runner & Table Skirt Sizing Guide

Buying a table runner should be easy. It's a strip of fabric. Then you stand in the aisle — or scroll the listing — and realize you have no idea if 90 inches is right, or too long, or comically short. And table skirts? Worse. Nobody remembers the math for those until the delivery arrives and the skirt stops two feet short of wrapping the table.

Here's the good news: both pieces follow simple rules. Table runner sizes come down to one formula and a drop preference. Table skirts come down to height plus perimeter. Get those two numbers right and you'll never guess again.

The One Rule for Table Runner Length

A runner runs the length of your table, plus a little extra hanging over each end. That overhang is called the drop, and it's the entire style decision.

Runner length = table length + (2 × drop)

The drop is where taste shows up:

  • 6 inches per side — clean, modern, casual brunch energy
  • 12 inches per side — the classic. Formal without trying too hard
  • 18–24 inches per side — dramatic, pooling slightly, "wedding in a barn with fairy lights"

So a standard 6-foot banquet table (72 inches long) with a classic 12-inch drop needs 72 + 24 = 96 inches. The nearest standard size is a 108-inch runner, which gives you 18-inch drops instead. Totally fine. Runners forgive a little extra length; they never forgive being short.

A runner shorter than the table is the one true sizing sin. It reads as a mistake, not a choice. When in doubt, size up.

Standard Table Runner Sizes, Mapped to Tables

Most runners come in four lengths: 72", 90", 108", and 120". Here's what fits what:

Table length Runner to buy Drop you get
48 in (small dining) 72 in 12 in
60 in (round or rect) 90 in 15 in
72 in (6 ft banquet) 108 in 18 in
96 in (8 ft banquet) 120 in 12 in

Round tables want runners too — laid straight across the diameter, or two runners crossed for a quadrant look. A 60-inch round with a 108-inch runner gets 24-inch drops draping down both sides, which photographs beautifully.

Table Runner Width: The Number Everyone Forgets

Standard runner width runs 13 to 14 inches. That's the safe default for dining tables and everyday centerpieces.

Two situations push you wider:

  • Oversized centerpieces. A wide vessel — say, a 16-inch bowl of hydrangeas — sits awkwardly straddling a narrow runner. An 18-inch runner fixes that.
  • The "tablecloth lite" look. Wide runners (18–20 inches) running the table's length can carry place settings directly on them, with the bare wood showing on either side. Popular at long farmhouse tables.

Width never needs math. It's a vibe call. Length is the math.

Sizing a Table Skirt: Height First

Table skirts work backward from runners: the critical number is height, not length.

Skirt height = your table's height. Standard banquet and folding tables stand 29–30 inches tall. Most skirts come 29" or 30" high to match. The skirt should just kiss the floor — or hover a half-inch above it. Gaps look unfinished; extra fabric dragging on the floor collects dirt and becomes a trip hazard.

Measure your actual table, including any casters or folding legs. Buffet carts and DIY setups run odd heights all the time. If you're between sizes, buy the shorter skirt. Hemming an inch is easy. Adding fabric isn't.

Table Skirt Length: The Perimeter Math

A skirt wraps around the outside edge of the tabletop. The raw number you need:

Skirt length = 2 × (table length + table width) — then add 10–20% because pleats eat fabric.

For display tables pushed against a wall, skirt the front and two sides only: table length + (2 × width).

Here's how that lands in practice:

Table Three-sided skirt Full wrap
6 ft rect (72×30) 14 ft 17 ft
8 ft rect (96×30) 17 ft 21 ft
60 in round — 17 ft
48 in round — 14 ft

Those 14 ft, 17 ft, and 21 ft numbers aren't random — they're the standard pleated skirt lengths sold across the industry, sized precisely so a 6-foot table three-sides cleanly with a 14-footer. If your event has the table floating in the room where guests walk all sides, spring for the full wrap. A skirt that stops mid-table is worse than no skirt.

Layering Runner, Cloth, and Skirt Together

When a runner sits on top of a full tablecloth, keep measuring from the tabletop, not the cloth — the runner's drop reads against the cloth's surface, so the same length rules apply.

One coordination rule worth keeping: don't stack drops. If your tablecloth drops 12 inches, a runner pooling 24 inches at the same corner looks chaotic rather than lush. Keep the runner's drop at or slightly above the cloth's. Same for skirts — the skirt runs to the floor, so let it be the only floor-length element in the scene.

Four Mistakes to Dodge

  • Runner shorter than the table. There's no styling workaround for this one.
  • Skirt height gap. Measure the table, not the catalog's idea of a table.
  • Forgetting pleat allowance. A 204-inch perimeter doesn't fit a 204-inch pleated skirt. The pleats need their lunch.
  • Measuring with extension leaves out. That dining table gains 24 inches when Grandma comes over. Size the runner for the table you actually use on holidays.

The 30-Second Cheat Sheet

Runner length = table length + 2× drop (6" casual, 12" classic, 18"+ dramatic). Runner width = 14" standard, 18–20" for big centerpieces or settings-on-runner looks. Skirt height = table height, kissing the floor. Skirt length = perimeter + 10–20% for pleats — 14 ft for a 6-footer against a wall, 17 ft for full wrap.

That's it. No more guessing in the aisle.
