Burst! Another port strike! Announce an "indefinite strike" tomorrow and refuse to work overtime!

According to foreign media on October 8 news, recently, the labor-management tensions in the Canadian port of Montreal have intensified, and the contract dispute will enter a new stage, and an "indefinite strike" will enter the countdown.

The Port of Montreal Dockworkers Union has issued an overtime strike notice that will stop overtime indefinitely starting at 7 a.m. on Oct. 10. A three-day strike last week halted operations at two busy Canadian seaport terminals.

After the union announced that its members would stop working overtime, the Canadian Maritime Employers Association (MEA) formally asked the union to withdraw the strike notice, calling it a "pressure tactic." The MEA warned that "a complete halt to overtime has significant implications for deployed personnel and the missions required for operations."

The company later said employees assigned to incomplete shifts would not be paid, marking an escalation of the ongoing labor dispute.

The union explained, If the shift is not changed in a timely manner, the speed of the port operation will be slowed down, or even the operation will be interrupted, which will have an impact on the public.

Michel Murray, a consultant for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, said the overtime strike was designed to put "a little pressure" on employers to quickly find a solution. The MEA reiterated its willingness to continue negotiations and urged the union to follow the procedures laid down by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service "in order to reach a negotiated agreement as soon as possible."

Negotiations for the renewal of Canada's longshoremen's collective agreement have been going on for more than a year because of wage disputes and working conditions. MEA said "this prolonged delay and the recurrence of Labour disputes" has affected Canada's economy and the resulting "significant decline" in port cargo has created "serious financial challenges" for MEA.
